Description: This book explores the connections between the changes in the conventional wisdom about child-rearing and the new ways that autobiographers and diarists in Holland began to write about childhood between the 17th and 19th centuries. Dekker (history, Erasmus U., Rotterdam) discusses how, by 1800, diarists more openly mourned the loss of a child and autobiographers, using mediums as diverse as paintings, poetry, and novels wrote (or drew) more candidly about their early years. He also explores how these depictions of childhood were connected to and reflected in the ways children and childhood were perceived, as children themselves began to be taken more seriously, and childhood began to play a more important role as a valued phase of life.
